Materials Needed

This coastal project was created by Melissa Bradshaw of Junk and Craft Treasures, known for her fun vintage-inspired DIY style and creative stencil projects.

Step 1: Paint the Board

Start by painting your 10” x 12” board with white paint using a stencil brush or standard paint brush. Allow the first coat to dry completely, then apply a second coat for solid coverage.

Applying two light coats helps create a cleaner stencil finish later on.

Step 2: Prep the Surface

Once the paint is fully dry, lightly sand the board to smooth out the surface. Wipe away any sanding dust before moving on to stenciling.

This extra prep step helps the stencil sit flatter against the board for crisp paint lines.

Step 3: Stencil the Coastal Details

Position and tape down the Vintage Lobster Shack stencil onto the board.

Using a mini stencil brush and blue paint, stencil the coastal flourishes along with the words β€œShack” and β€œFresh Caught.”

Use a light swirling or tapping motion with minimal paint on the brush to avoid bleed-through.

Step 4: Add the Main Design

Next, switch to red paint and fill in the remaining stencil design using a stencil brush.

Carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet and allow everything to dry completely.

Removing the stencil slowly helps preserve clean edges and prevents smudging.

Step 5: Add Dimension

To give the lobster extra depth and character, lightly dry brush orange paint over portions of the red lobster design.

This layered color effect creates a fun coastal look while adding visual texture to the finished sign.
