Coastal Turtle Wall Art 🌊 Create a Stunning Blended Stain Background

DIY Coastal Turtle Wall Art with Blended Stain Background

Hey friends! Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design joined us live to share a beautiful coastal project that’s perfect for transitioning from summer into fall. Using just a few colors of stain, the Sea Turtle Stencil, and the Grass Stencil, she created a coastal-inspired piece that feels like a postcard from the beach. Let’s walk through the steps so you can make your own!

    Step-by-Step Tutorial

    1. Stain the Background

Cover the entire board (including the edges) with Bay Blue stain using a sponge.

    2. Blend Botanical Green

With a clean sponge, blend Botanical Green on the lower half of the board. Lightly spritz with water to soften the transition and achieve a smooth ombre effect.

    3. Sand Smooth

Once the stain is completely dry, sand the surface lightly to prepare for stenciling.

    4. Stencil the Sea Turtle

Position the Sea Turtle Stencil in the center of the board. Using a stencil brush, apply white paint in light dabbing motions. Add a second coat for a crisp finish. Use a blow dryer to speed up drying if needed.

    5. Add Seagrass

Place the Grass Stencil just below the turtle, tilting it slightly for a natural look. Stencil with black paint, then repeat on the opposite side to create a grassy base.

    6. Final Reveal

Your coastal turtle wall art is complete! The stained background brings depth, while the white turtle and black grasses pop against it beautifully.

    Helpful Tips

    • Spritzing water while blending stain helps soften harsh lines.
    • Always offload your stencil brush on a paper towel to prevent paint bleed.
    • For added interest, let your stencil design run slightly off the edges of the board.
    • Batching your backgrounds ahead of time makes creating multiple pieces faster and more profitable if you sell your crafts.
