DIY Western-Inspired Cedar Name Sign

Materials Needed

Prepare cedar board for Western name sign

Step 1: Prepare Your Board

Start with a clean, dry 15" x 11" cedar board. Cedar has beautiful natural grain that looks especially stunning once it's finished, making it a perfect choice for rustic nursery decor.

Arrange Western letter stencils

Step 2: Arrange and Tape Your Letters

Choose the letters needed for your name and find the center of your board before placing your stencils. Starting with the middle letter and working outward helps create even spacing.

Tip: Secure each stencil with painter's tape so nothing shifts while you're painting.

Paint Western letters

Step 3: Paint the Name

Using an off-white acrylic paint and a stencil brush, apply the paint using a light swirling motion. Be sure to offload most of the paint onto a coffee filter or paper towel first.

Less paint is best when stenciling. Building the color slowly helps create crisp, clean edges.

Add Aztec stencil pattern

Step 4: Add the Western Accent

Position the Aztec pattern from the Howdy 16" Door Hanger Set along the bottom of the board and fill it in using the same off-white paint. This simple detail ties the entire project together and gives it a soft Western nursery feel.

Apply Wood Honey finish

Step 5: Finish with Wood Honey

Once the paint is completely dry, apply Wood Honey over the entire board. This step brings out the rich cedar tones and creates beautiful contrast against the white stenciling.

This transformation is always one of the most satisfying parts of the project.
