Gingerbread Sign & Reversible Pillow – Two Cozy Holiday DIYs

Today we’re crafting with Melissa Bradshaw of Junk and Craft Treasures — one of Essential Stencil’s wonderful ambassadors. She walked us through two warm, gingerbread-themed projects you can easily recreate at home.

These pieces use just a few paint colors, thoughtful blending, and two of our cutest gingerbread stencils. Let’s jump in!

    Gingerbread Sign (12Ă—16 Wood Sign)

    Materials

    Step 1: Paint the Base

Start by giving your board a smooth white base coat. Add a second coat if needed.

Once dry, lightly sand for an even finish.

    Step 2: Position the Stencil

Tape the Oh Snap! Gingerbread Stencil securely to the board.

    Step 3: Add Color

Red: Fill the heart with red paint.

Pink Blending: Mix red + cream to make soft pink for highlight areas.

Turquoise: Add playful pops of color.

Brown: Finish the gingerbread details using brown paint.

    Helpful Tips
    • Offload extra paint to avoid bleed-through.
    • Use angled strokes with chip brushes to reduce visible brush lines.
    • Layer pinks by adjusting your red/cream ratio for natural shading.

    Reversible Gingerbread Bakeshop Pillow

    Materials

Step 1: Prep the Pillow Cover

Slide cardboard or two stencil backer sheets inside to prevent paint bleed-through.

    Step 2: Position the Stencil

    Step 3: Add Color

Red: Swirl red paint into the “Gingerbread” lettering.

Brown: Paint both gingerbread cookie shapes.

Black: Fill the rest of the wording using a clean brush.

    Final Reveal

    Helpful Tips
    • Fabric absorbs more paint—offload lightly and build slowly.
    • Use parchment paper + iron or tumble dry on high for 20 minutes to heat-set the design.
    • Make it reversible by stenciling both sides of the pillow cover.
