There's something special about decorating for fall, especially when you can create a custom piece that's full of warmth and personality. In this project, Essential Stencil Ambassador Tammy Muto of Cheers to Creativity transforms a simple 16" wood round into an adorable fox door hanger using layered stencils, rich autumn colors, and a few easy painting techniques that add beautiful depth and texture.
One of the best parts of this project is that the stencil does all the hard work of creating the design, while a few simple blending techniques give your fox a soft, realistic finish.

Paint the wood round with Forest Green using a household sponge. While the paint is still damp, dab on Evergreen, Champagne Gold, and small touches of Black Green. Blend lightly with the sponge to create subtle variation and depth.
Don't overblend. Leaving small areas of each color visible creates a rich, dimensional background.

After the paint has dried completely, lightly sand the surface to remove any raised wood grain or rough spots before stenciling.

Center the first fox stencil layer. Fill with Burnt Umber, then add Burnt Sienna before removing the stencil.

Using a wisp (rake) brush, pull small strokes outward around the edges and throughout the fox to create a soft, furry appearance.
This extra step gives the stencil a beautiful hand-painted look.

Align the second stencil layer carefully. Fill the face and ears with White and the remaining sections with Coco.

Use the wisp brush again to feather the White around the face and ears. Blend Coco and Burnt Sienna together throughout the body and tail for extra realism.

Once dry, position the final stencil layer and apply the darkest brown to define the eyes, ears, nose, and tail.

Stencil the "Hello Fall" greeting at the top of the board. Paint the acorn bodies with Coco and the caps with Dark Brown.

Lighten the word "Hello" using a custom light green mixture while painting "Fall" with Coco and Burnt Sienna for a warm autumn finish.

Reuse the first stencil layer to paint the leaves with metallic Espresso, Gold, Orange, Light Green, Bright Red, Purple, and Teal for a colorful fall display.

Your Hello Fall Fox Door Hanger is ready to welcome the season with rich colors, layered details, and a hand-painted appearance that's surprisingly easy to achieve using layered stencils.
