How to Make a Reversible Fall Paddle with Stencils & Rub-On Transfers

Materials

Side One: Pumpkin & Ghost Design

Step 1: Apply the Base Stain

Start by staining one side of the paddle with orange stain using a staining sponge. Apply an even coat and allow the stain to soak into the wood.

Step 2: Blend the Edges

Using a clean staining sponge, apply black stain around the outer edges. Lightly mist the surface with water and blend the black into the orange until you achieve a soft smoky finish. Allow it to dry completely.

Step 3: Lightly Sand

Once dry, lightly sand the surface to create a smooth finish before decorating.

Step 4: Apply the Transfer

Cut out the pumpkin and ghost design from the Spooky Haunted House Rub-On Transfer. Position it near the bottom of the paddle and burnish thoroughly with the Essential Transfer Tool until fully adhered.

Step 5: Add the Lettering

Position the "Pumpkins 25¢" stencil from the August 2026 Stencil of the Month above the transfer. Using a stencil brush and black paint, stencil with a light swirling motion after offloading most of the paint.

Step 6: Finish with Pattern Details

Using the small pattern from the Pumpkin Harvest Pattern Stencil, decorate the upper portion of the paddle, the handle, and lightly around the edges.

Side Two: Harvest Blessings

Step 1: Create the Background

Flip the paddle over and stain the opposite side with white stain.

While the stain is still damp, blend in a small amount of black stain. Mist lightly with water and continue blending until you create a soft smoky gray finish. Let dry completely before lightly sanding.

Step 2: Apply the Transfer

Choose another transfer from the Pumpkin Harvest collection and position it near the bottom of the paddle. Burnish thoroughly until fully adhered.

Step 3: Stencil the Sentiment

Stencil "Harvest Blessings" above the transfer using black paint and a stencil brush.

Step 4: Complete the Design

Use the same small Pumpkin Harvest pattern stencil to decorate the remaining open areas. This creates a cohesive design while keeping the background subtle.

Final Reveal
