Meet the Cutest Corn Maze Scarecrow! 🌻 A Charming Fall Stencil Project

Corn Maze Scarecrow

Give your fall decor a cheerful farmhouse touch with this adorable Corn Maze Scarecrow! This project starts with a 12-inch round board and a three-layer Happy Scarecrow stencil. By building the design one layer at a time, you can create lots of detail without making the project complicated.

We’re also switching things up with a fun Corn Maze message from the Fall Word Set and a coordinating arrow from the Fall Farm Signs Set.

The best part? You can easily change the colors to match your own fall decor. In this version, a bright red handkerchief adds a fun pop of color against the warm browns, greens, and golds.

Materials

Layer One: Build the Base

Start with a 12-inch round board painted white. The Happy Scarecrow stencil is sized to fit this round perfectly.

Position the first layer of the stencil on the board. If your stencil includes registration marks, take a moment to line them up carefully. These little marks make layering much easier and help keep all the details in the right place.

Painting the first layer of the Happy Scarecrow stencil

For the scarecrow's face, mix white with Chestnut Mare to create a soft, light rusty orange-brown shade. Use a stencil brush and gently swirl the paint over the face area.

Next, use a mini stencil brush to add a light brown shade to the top of the hat. Switch to a darker chocolate brown for the hat brim.

Grab another stencil brush and fill the leaf on the hat with a muted green. For the handkerchief, use bright red paint.

This is also a great reminder that stencil colors are easy to customize. The original design used a different color for the handkerchief, but switching it to red gives this scarecrow a completely different look.

Once you have finished the first layer, carefully lift the stencil and allow the paint to dry completely.

Helpful Tips

  • Use a lighter touch with your stencil brush. Several light applications are easier to control than one heavy coat.
  • Use a smaller brush for narrow stencil openings and tiny details.
  • Let each layer dry completely before adding the next one.

Layer Two: Add the Details

Once the first layer is completely dry, carefully position the second layer of the Happy Scarecrow stencil. Line up the registration marks before painting.

Now it's time to add more color to the leaves. Use muted green, Chestnut Mare for a rusty brown shade, and deep red. Use the same red on the handkerchief to add details and dimension to the folds.

Add rosy pink paint to the cheeks and brown paint to the nose.

Next, paint the crow black. Use yellow for the straw, sunflower, and small hat patch.

For the tiny hat details, use a mini stencil brush and muted blue paint. Add white to the eyes.

For small stencil openings, pounce gently instead of loading the brush with too much paint. This gives you much more control over the details.

Allow the paint to dry completely, then carefully lift the second stencil layer.

Helpful Tips

  • Registration marks are your best friend when working with layered stencils. Take your time lining them up.
  • Keep a mini stencil brush nearby for small details.
  • Don't worry about making your colors exactly match the sample. Fall colors are easy to personalize.

Layer Three: Bring Him to Life

Now it's time for the third and final layer. Carefully position the stencil and match up the registration marks once again.

Use black paint for the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and the darker area underneath the hat brim.

For the crow's wing, mix a little blue with black to create a soft bluish-gray shade.

Adding details to the crow and handkerchief

Use white paint for the crow's eye, the small dots on the handkerchief, and the details on the hat patch.

Finish the remaining hat details with another shade of muted blue. For the sunflower, use a darker golden shade around the outside and chocolate brown in the center.

Finishing the hat and sunflower details

For an extra touch of texture, try light stippling in the sunflower center. It gives the center a more natural, dimensional appearance.

Carefully lift the final stencil and admire all those layers coming together!

Helpful Tips

  • Use a stippling motion when you want to add texture. This works especially well on the sunflower center.
  • For very small areas, use a mini brush and apply the paint gently.
  • Give the final layer time to dry before moving on to the lettering.

Add the Corn Maze Message

Instead of using the original wording, we're giving this scarecrow a fun Corn Maze theme.

Grab the Fall Word Set and find the Corn Maze word stencil. Position it just below the scarecrow and use chocolate brown paint, matching the sunflower center.

Next, grab the Fall Farm Signs Set. Position just the arrow underneath the words β€œCorn Maze” and fill it with the same chocolate brown paint.

Helpful Tips

  • Mix and match your stencil sets to create a custom sign. You don't have to use the wording that comes with the original design.
  • Use one coordinating paint color for multiple elements to help tie the design together.
  • Before painting lettering, check the spacing from several angles to make sure everything is centered.

The Finished Corn Maze Scarecrow

And there he is! The finished Corn Maze Scarecrow is full of warm fall colors, sweet little details, and plenty of personality.

The three-layer Happy Scarecrow Stencil does the hard work of creating all that detail. Once you break the design down layer by layer, it's a fun and approachable project.

And don't be afraid to make it your own. Change the handkerchief color, adjust the fall palette, or add your own favorite words. That's part of the fun of stenciling!
